How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia? (2026 Guide)

The Short Answer: It Depends on What You Actually Need
A tradie in Nowra and a multi-location retail chain both need websites, but they shouldn’t be paying the same price, or getting the same product. Website cost in Australia in 2026 ranges from around $200 a year for a DIY build to $30,000+ for a complex custom ecommerce platform. Most small businesses land somewhere in the $2,000 to $6,000 range for a professionally built site, and AI-powered tools have pushed those prices down considerably from where they were even two years ago.
Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what each price point actually gets you, and where our own published prices sit against them.
How AI Has Brought Website Prices Down in 2026
It’s worth understanding why pricing has shifted before we get into the numbers. AI tools now assist with layout generation, copywriting, image creation, and code, which has significantly reduced the hours a developer needs to build a quality site. A project that once took 40 hours can now take 20. That saving gets passed on.
This doesn’t mean all website agencies are cheaper. It means the good ones are delivering more value for the same money, and the gap between a well-built site and a cheap one has narrowed. What you’re really paying for now is strategy, conversion thinking, and ongoing support, not just the hours spent in a code editor.
DIY Website Builders: $200-$600 Per Year
Platforms like Wix and Squarespace make it easy to get something online fast. You’re looking at $200 to $600 per year all-in (domain, hosting, and the builder subscription). The trade-off? You’re spending your own time building it, the SEO capabilities are limited compared to WordPress, and the design often looks like a hundred other websites in your industry.
For a brand-new business testing a concept, this can make sense. For an established business trying to win customers, it rarely does.
The $500 to $2,000 Bracket: It Depends Entirely Who Builds It
This is the bracket people get burned in, and it is worth being precise about why, because the price is not the problem.
At the bad end, somebody drops your logo and text into a premium WordPress or Elementor template and hands it over. It looks professional at a glance and works on mobile, but it was built to a brief rather than built to convert. Nobody thought about what happens when a customer actually lands on the page, and that is why these sites underperform.
At the good end, the same money buys a small site that was genuinely designed, because AI has taken the hours out of the build rather than out of the thinking. Our Launch package sits here at $1,290: one high-impact page, live in about a week, AI-assisted then professionally finished by a designer, with click-to-call and Google Maps built in. It is deliberately small and we say so. Right for a new business that needs to look established quickly, wrong for one that needs ten pages of service coverage.
So do not judge this bracket on the number. Ask what is in it, and ask to see three sites they have built.
Ongoing costs here are modest either way: around $300 to $500 a year for hosting and domain. (Worth noting that cheap web hosting can quietly hurt your website’s performance and security, so the cheapest hosting plan is rarely the right call.)
Professional Custom Website: $2,500-$6,000
This is where most serious Australian small businesses should be investing in 2026. For $2,500 to $6,000 you get a custom-designed WordPress site (8 to 12 pages), proper SEO foundations, mobile optimisation, a conversion-focused layout, and a team that actually thinks about what your visitors need to do when they arrive. AI tools have made this price range genuinely viable for quality work.
Two of our four packages sit in this bracket, and we publish both rather than quoting them privately. Growth is $2,490: custom design around your brand, 5 to 10 pages built to convert, on-page SEO, Google Analytics and conversion tracking set up, and your Google Business Profile sorted. Authority is $4,490: 10 to 20 pages of deep service coverage, a blog or news section, SEO foundations done properly, and your Google reviews showcased on the site.
If your website is supposed to generate leads, and for most businesses it should, this is the range where it starts to pay for itself. A site that converts even a small percentage more of its visitors into enquiries can recover the cost within months.
Full Custom Build: $6,000-$12,000
For businesses that need professional copywriting, a fully bespoke design, advanced functionality, or multiple service areas, a full custom build is the right move. You’re getting a site built from the ground up for your specific audience and conversion goals.
Our Scale package is $7,990: deep design research and a fully bespoke layout, an ecommerce store or custom functionality, advanced integrations for bookings, CRM or members, and a priority slot in the build queue. Above that, genuine enterprise work (custom web applications, portals, multi-site platforms) runs $15,000 to $50,000 and up, and is quoted rather than packaged.
This makes sense for businesses with real online competition, or those who’ve already been burned by a cheaper site that didn’t deliver.
Ecommerce Websites: $3,500-$15,000+
Selling online adds complexity. A professionally set-up Shopify store now starts around $3,500 thanks to AI-assisted product setup and design tools. A WooCommerce build with custom design, payment integration, and product management typically runs $5,000 to $12,000. Enterprise platforms with complex inventory, subscriptions, or third-party integrations can still exceed $15,000 to $25,000+.
The upfront cost is only part of the picture. Ongoing platform fees, transaction fees, and maintenance all add up. Make sure you understand the total cost of ownership before committing to a platform.
Don’t Forget Ongoing Costs
Whatever you spend upfront, there are recurring costs to factor in:
- Domain name: $20-$100 per year
- Web hosting: $120-$1,200 per year depending on quality and traffic
- Maintenance and updates: $600-$3,600 per year for security patches, plugin updates, and support
- SEO: $300-$2,000 per month if you want to rank for competitive search terms
Our hosting starts at $50 a month on a once-off build, and it includes security hardening, hourly Australian backups, maintenance and support rather than charging for them separately. Copywriting, if you want us to write the words, is $150 per page.
A website that nobody finds is just an expensive brochure. Build the ongoing marketing cost into your thinking from the start.
The Option Most Guides Leave Out: Never Buying It at All
Everything above assumes you buy a website, then pay someone else to market it. There is a second model, and for a lot of small businesses it is the better one.
Our Website & Marketing plans bundle the website, the hosting, the support and the SEO into a single monthly figure, with no build cost upfront:
- Essential, $349 a month. Up to 10 pages, 5 performing keyphrases, one geographical area, Google Business Profile set up and updated monthly, a blog post each quarter, monthly reporting and 15 minutes with your account manager.
- Advanced, $779 a month. Up to 20 pages, 15 keyphrases, three geographical areas, weekly Google Business Profile updates, a monthly blog post, and conversion tracking on calls and forms.
- Complete, $1,390 a month. Up to 40 pages, 30 keyphrases, six geographical areas, monthly content optimisation, Search Console and Analytics managed for you, and your Google Ads account built and managed, with the ad budget itself paid to Google separately.
Compare that against the ongoing costs list above honestly. The bottom of the market’s SEO range alone is $300 a month, before the website, the hosting or the support. Essential is $349 with all four included.
We can price it that way because we only do SEO on websites we built. Most agencies inherit a site they cannot change and spend half the retainer fighting slow hosting, bloated code and broken structure. We built it, we host it, and we can change anything the same day, so that duplication comes out of the price. It also means we cannot help with SEO on somebody else’s build, which is a real limit and we would rather say so upfront.
All prices exclude GST. The plans run 12 months minimum, then month to month with no cancellation fees.
Why the Cheapest Option Often Costs the Most
We see it regularly: a business spends $800 on a site, gets poor results for two years, then spends $5,000 to rebuild it properly. They’ve spent $5,800 and lost two years of leads in the process.
A well-built site isn’t a cost, it’s infrastructure. The question isn’t “how little can I spend?” but “what do I need this site to do, and what’s that worth to my business?”
If you’re not sure what the right investment looks like for your situation, knowing how to choose the right website design company is a good place to start. Asking the right questions upfront saves a lot of money later.
