Social Media Marketing Tips 2018

A social media presence should be a part of every business’s marketing strategy. However, getting the most out of a social media campaign isn’t easy, especially in the ever-changing social network landscape. To help you use social media to your business’s advantage, we’ve put together these social media marketing tips that factor in recent changes so you can stay ahead of the game.

Stay Active (But Not Too Active)

Many businesses start using social media with great enthusiasm but give up after a couple of weeks when they don’t receive the followers and likes they were hoping for. Achieving your social media goals, whether they be to increase brand awareness, drive traffic to your website or generate new leads, requires a long-term commitment. Therefore, you need to stay active on relevant social media channels (see next tip) and post consistently. Remember, excessive posting will put your users off, so only post high-quality content that will appeal to your audience.

Be Selective With Social Media Channels

Social media is a powerful tool, but that doesn’t mean you need to have a presence on every channel. Before you set up an account on every platform, have a think about where your potential audience is likely to spend most of their time. If you are a legal firm, is it really necessary to have a Pinterest account? Similarly, if you are selling homewares, establishing a LinkedIn presence may not be the best use of your time. Whichever social media platforms you choose to target, make sure you tailor your content to suit each network and its users. Don’t just copy and paste from one channel to the next. Tailoring content will take extra time, but it will also produce better results.

Start A Conversation

Even though you may be talking about your business, a corporate tone is not conducive to interaction. In other words, if no one finds your post interesting they won’t respond. On Facebook, this means the post won’t be shown to anyone resulting in zero benefit to your business. Why? In January 2018, Facebook announced it would be changing its algorithm to prioritize ‘meaningful interactions between people.’

“The new algorithm prioritizes active interactions like commenting and sharing over likes and click-throughs (passive interactions)—the idea being that actions requiring more effort on the part of the user are of higher quality and thus more meaningful.”

So how can your business navigate its way through this change? Start a conversation. Ask questions and respond to the answers. If you connect with your audience n a meaningful way, more users will see your post.

DIY Is Not Always Best

Time is limited, especially if you are a small business owner. Delegating your social media marketing to someone within your team, or to an outside specialist, will give you the freedom to focus on other tasks.
